I Think I Broke a Tooth

One of the most common dental emergencies is a broken tooth. There are a couple of reasons why a tooth cracks.

The first is that a tooth has a large cavity and softens the core of the tooth then the brittle enamel cracks when you bite down on something hard.

The second is a simple fracture. Enamel is strong but brittle. If there is a crack that had started in the enamel it can grow from large silver fillings, tooth grinding, or biting on something particularly hard like ice.

A cracked tooth can be painful, but not always. In either case call your dentist as soon as possible. Cracked or broken teeth can brake further or cause the nerve to die.
